Today is International Museum Day

Today is International Museum Day, and just like in Portugal, it is celebrated in many other countries. On this day, many museums have free entry and/or special programs. Therefore, pay attention to the website and/or social media of your museum of interest.

Each year, a different theme is chosen to guide celebrations and events around the world. In 2023, the theme of International Museum Day is “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion”. The objective is to highlight the role of museums in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in society, and how they can contribute to building a fairer and more equitable world.

In previous years, themes for International Museum Day in Portugal have included:

2022: “Museums as Agents of Social Change and Sustainable Development”

2021: “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine”

2020: “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion”

2019: “Museums as Cultural Centers: The Future of Tradition”

2018: “Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Audiences”

These themes reflect the importance of museums in society, as places of preservation, education and engagement with history, culture and the arts.
