Lisbon Festivals in June: arraiais, sardines and joy on every corner
We, at Dicas de Lisboa, love this month because it is when the city gains a different energy - more cheerful, colourful and full of life. It is impossible not to notice the flags hanging from street to street, the mansiles on the windows and the irresistible smell of roasted sardines that takes over the air. Lisbon becomes a true outdoor stage, where tradition and fun go hand in hand. It is at this time that we really feel the Lisbon spirit pulsating, with popular festivals in almost all neighbourhoods, music playing until dawn and a cultural program that invites us to enjoy every corner of the city. If there is a perfect month to feel Lisbon with all the senses, this is it. And we'll show you why!
🎉 Lisbon festivals in June: camp, tradition and a lot of joy in the streets
If there's something we look forward to all year round, it's the Lisbon Festival. And in June, there is no way to escape: the city becomes a giant camp! From the first day of the month to the last, Lisbon is taken over by popular music, colourful flags, dancers on the street and that good smell of grilled sardines.
Everything revolves around Saint Anthony, our dear patron saint. He is known for being a matchmaker - and that's why, every year on June 12, the famous Saint Anthony's Weddings take place, organised by the City Council. Lisbon couples (and some from outside too!) Are chosen to get married on the same day, in a super beautiful ceremony, with the right to courtship through the historic neighbourhoods, blessing in the Lisbon Cathedral and a lot of affection from the public. It's exciting to see, even if it's just as a spectator.
But the party doesn't stop there. On the night of June 12 to 13 - the most anticipated of the month - the great parade of the Popular Marches takes place on Avenida da Liberdade. Each neighbourhood of Lisbon chooses a theme, prepares choreographies, costumes and original songs, and then parades with great pride and creativity. It's a show full of colour, brightness and tradition, which gives you goosebumps (in a good way!).
Throughout the month, there are camps scattered throughout the city. The most traditional are in Alfama, Bairro Alto, Mouraria, Graça and Bica, but in fact almost all neighbourhoods organise their party. Just follow the music, the smell of grills and the sound of laughter! In the camps, the fun is simple and good: typical food and drinks (we've already talked about sardines, but there are also steaks, green broth, churros and cold beer), Portuguese popular music, outdoor dances and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for making new friends - or even finding love, why not?
Oh, and we can't forget the manjericos, those round and fragrant plants that are offered with popular courts - usually with messages of love and humour. It's a tradition to give a manjerico to someone special, and we love to see the windows and counters blooming with them!
The Lisbon Festivals are not just a tradition: they are a true invitation to live the city with intensity. It is impossible to pass through Lisbon in June and not get involved in this unique atmosphere. So, if you are around at that time, get ready to dance, eat well and celebrate with us. Lisbon, in June, is joy on every corner.
🌞 June in Lisbon: sun, heat and the right clothes to enjoy everything without stress
When June arrives, Lisbon really welcomes summer. The days get bigger, clearer and the sun seems to be in no hurry to set. We love this time of year because you can enjoy the city from the beginning to the end of the day - whether walking in the viewpoints, exploring the historic neighbourhoods or dancing until dawn in the camps.
The temperatures in Lisbon during the month of June are very pleasant. During the day, it is usually between 23ºC and 28ºC, but we have already caught days that reach close to 30ºC. At night it cools a little, with minimums around 17ºC, so you can breathe better after a hot day.
The weather is dry, with very little rain (sometimes none!), and the blue sky is almost certain presence. It's that kind of weather that invites you to be on the street, to drink an imperial on an esplanade, to walk through Alfama or to watch the sunset in Ribeira das Naus.
Now, let's talk about clothes - because knowing what to take in the suitcase (or wear on the day) makes all the difference:
👕 By day:
Opt for light and fresh clothing, such as t-shirts, dresses, skirts, shorts or linen shirts.
Sunglasses, hat or cap and sunscreen are indispensable - the Lisbon sun doesn't play!
Wear comfortable shoes. Lisbon is full of climbs, sidewalks and steps, so sneakers or comfortable sandals are the best bet.
🧥 At night:
Even on hot nights, you should take a light jacket or a thin sweater. In areas near the river or in the higher neighbourhoods a cool breeze can hit, especially after 11pm.
If you go to camps or street parties, take something practical, that can stand for a few hours or even an improvised dance.
And a special tip: as June is the month of holidays, don't be surprised to see people wearing wreaths, shirts with fun prints and even typical disguises. It's all part of the fun! Join the spirit of the party - the more colourful and lively, the better.
🍽️ Eat in Lisbon in June: sardines on bread, steaks, green broth and much more!
If there is something that makes our eyes shine and the stomach rumble during the month of June, it is the wonderful smells that spread the streets of Lisbon. It's just that this is really the time when typical food gains prominence - and everything is done there, outdoors, on the grills of the camps, in the improvised stalls, in the most traditional neighbourhoods.
The absolute star of the party is undoubtedly the roasted sardine. Anyone who has been through a camp knows what we are talking about: the smell invades the streets and it is almost impossible not to follow the aroma until you find a smoking grill. The sardine is served in a simple way - usually on bread or with boiled potatoes and pepper salad - but the flavour is anything but basic. It's the flavour of party, tradition, summer.
And don't think there's only sardines! In the arraiais, we find other delights that are part of our gastronomic identity:
🐟 Sardines on bread (as tradition dictates!)
It is the greatest symbol of the Lisbon Festivals. In June, there are sardines everywhere, but there are places where the flavour is even more authentic.
👉 Tip from Dicas de Lisboa: go to Mouraria or Alfama on party nights - especially on the 12th. There, in the warehouses, sardines are roasted on the street, by people who have been doing this for years, with mastery and soul. A sardine on bread, with a glass of wine or an imperial one, tastes like the party like nothing else.
🐷 Steaks
They are pork sandwiches marinated with garlic, white wine and spices, served in papo-seco (the typical Portuguese bread). A practical, delicious and very popular option at any party. There are those who say that it is only complete with a little mustard on top - try it!
👉 Our suggestion: try the steaks of Bifanas do Afonso, on Rua da Madalena (Baixa). Simple, cheap, and with sauce that drips on the bread. Another option is in the camps themselves - some tents focus so much on the seasoning that it seems that we are eating at a family home.
🥩 Prego no pão
Another classic sandwiches, but this time with beef steak. Well seasoned, with garlic and often with a slice of melted cheese or fried egg, the nail is that "strongest" snack for those who need reinforcement after dancing for a few hours.
🥣 Caldo verde
Even on hot days, the green broth is present. It is a soup made with potatoes, thinly cut cabbage and chorizo slices - served in a bowl or glass, usually accompanied by a slice of bread (corn bread). Warm and tasty, it is perfect to recover energy.
👉 Tips Recommendation: try the green broth from Arraial de São Vicente or Graça's. They are served with generous slices of chorizo and freshly made, even as tradition dictates.
🧁 Typical sweets (to close with a golden key)
After so many good things, you can't miss a candy!
👉 Look for the stalls that sell honey cake, rice pudding and plenty - the holiday sweets always have a special flavour. For something more elaborate, stop by the National Confectionery, in Rossio, or at the Versailles Pastry Shop, in Picoas, for a real cream pastel.
🍷 And to drink?
Nothing too complicated. The typical party drink is:
Imperial very cold (beer in a small glass)
Red or white sangria
Ginja
Wine by the glass (often served in a plastic cup!)
👉Extra tip: If you are on the outskirts of Avenida da Liberdade or in Santos, take advantage of the bars and cafes that set up stalls with different drinks - sometimes even cocktails with a typical touch!
In June, eating in Lisbon is an experience that goes far beyond the palate. It's joining the party, sharing an improvised table, laughing out loud, toasting with strangers (who soon became friends), and letting yourself be carried away by the joy of popular flavours. And remember: if you see a line in front of a tent, it's probably worth the wait! 😉
🌿 Manjerico with court
It's not to eat, but you can't talk about the parties without talking about the morel, an aromatic plant typical of June. Sold in round vases with a coloured flag and a popular square (verse rhymed with grace or romanticism), masliry is pure tradition. Oh, and there's a trick: you don't smell it directly, you think you're unlucky - you rub it with your hand and you smell your hand. Curious, isn't it?
Eating during the month of June in Lisbon is not only feeding the body - it is being part of the party, sharing moments with strangers who have become drink friends, and savouring the soul of the city. So, when you come, come with appetite!
🏘️ Where are the best camps and what to visit in Lisbon in June
In June, every corner of Lisbon has something special to offer. But there are certain neighbourhoods that live the spirit of the parties more strongly - places where tradition pulsates, the music does not stop and the party goes on until dawn. The good news is that you can get to know several of these neighbourhoods in a single day (or night!), since Lisbon is a compact and easy city to explore.
🌟 Neighbourhoods with the liveliest camps
Alfama
It's the heart of the parties. Here it all started, and it continues to be the most sought-after neighbourhood in June. The narrow streets are filled with lights, music and many excited people. The environment is tight, but super cosy. Perfect for those who want to feel the most authentic and traditional side of the Lisbon Festivals. If you only have time for a camp, come to Alfama!
Mouraria
Right next to Alfama, Mouraria mixes tradition and multiculturalism. The arraials here have fado, sardines, DJs and a very relaxed vibe. It's great for those who want a night with more varied music and a younger audience.
Bairro Alto
Known for its nightlife, in June Bairro Alto becomes even more vibrant. In addition to the open bars, there are small street parties with live music and food and drink stalls. Ideal for those who want to start in a camp and end in a bar overlooking the Tagus.
Bica
One of the most beautiful and photogenic neighbourhoods in Lisbon, with its famous elevator street. In June, it becomes a modern camp with more current rhythms, young people and a lot of partying at night. A good meeting point before going down to Cais do Sodré.
Graça
Perfect for those who want a party with a view! Graça combines tradition with incredible viewpoints. It is common to find popular music, live dances and food stalls with homemade flavours. Go up to the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and let yourself be carried away by the view (and by the party!).
🗺️ What to visit in Lisbon in June (in to the holidays)
Of course, it's not just in the camp that lives in Lisbon in June. The city is beautiful and full of things to see, do and feel. Here are some suggestions to make the most of:
🏰 Saint George's Castle
Historic, imposing and with one of the most beautiful views of the city. June is a good time to visit it, especially in the late afternoon, when the heat drops and the sunlight makes everything golden.
🖼️ Museums and exhibitions
If you want to escape a little from the heat or the confusion of the camps, you can visit cultural spaces such as the Fado Museum, MAAT, or the National Tile Museum. In June, many have special programming.
🚋 Elétrico 28
Walking on the famous tram 28 is a classic! It passes through many historic neighbourhoods and is a fun (and photogenic) way to see Lisbon.
🌇 Viewpoints
Lisbon has several viewpoints scattered around the city, and in June they are at their best! We recommend the Grace one, the one from Senhora do Monte, The one of Santa Catarina (the famous Adamastor) and the one of Santa Justa. Bring the camera (or just the cell phone) because the registrations will be beautiful!
🌊 Walks by the river
The area of Ribeira das Naus, Cais do Sodré and even Belém are great for walking at the end of the day, watching the sunset or having a drink by the Tagus.
If you are in Lisbon in June, enjoy everything: the party neighbourhoods, the outdoor walks, the typical dishes and the contagious joy. It's the city at its peak - alive, colourful and full of tradition.
✈️ How to get there and drive around Lisbon in June (without stress!)
If you are planning to come to Lisbon in June, we have already warned you: it is one of the best times of the year to get to know the city - but also one of the busiest. Therefore, it is advisable to come prepared, especially in relation to transportation.
🚀 How to get to Lisbon
By plane
Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon) is very close to the centre - in less than 20 minutes they are already breathing the Lisbon air. There are direct flights from several cities in Europe, Brazil and other countries. Arriving at the airport, you can take the subway (red line), taxi, Uber/Bolt, or even the Aerobus, which takes you to central points such as Avenida da Liberdade or Cais do Sodré.
By train (train)
If you are in Portugal or in a neighbouring country, coming by train is also a good option. The main stations are Santa Apolónia Station and Oriente Station (the latter is closer to the airport). Both have a direct connection to the subway.
By bus (bus)
Several companies make international and national routes to Lisbon, arriving at Gare do Oriente or the Sete Rios Terminal - also with easy connection to the city centre.
By car
If you come by car, pay attention to traffic and parking, especially in June! Many streets are closed because of parties and finding a place to park can be complicated, especially in the most traditional neighbourhoods. If you can, leave the car in a park (paid parking) and use public transport.
🚇 How to get around Lisbon during the holidays
In June, walking around Lisbon requires a little patience - but also a spirit of adventure! With so much party, there are closed streets, more movement and changes in bus and tram lines.
Here are our best tips:
🚶 To walk
It's the best way to experience Lisbon in June! Especially at night, when parties take over the streets, cars stop passing and transport becomes full. Bring comfortable shoes and explore the neighbourhoods calmly - on foot, you will find surprises on every corner.
🚇 Metro
O Lisbon subway it's fast, safe and works well. On party days, it's the most practical way to get close to popular neighbourhoods (then just walk).
The Blue Line takes you to Baixa, Restauradores and Avenida.
The Green Line serves the area of Cais do Sodré and Intendente.
The Red Line comes from the airport and connects to the rest of the network. On some June nights (especially the 12th), the subway has extended hours until 3am or 4am, which is great for those who will enjoy the camps until late.
🚌 Buses and Electrics
They work well during the day, but at night many have the route changed or are diverted because of the camps. If you want to use it at night, you should confirm on the Carris website or in the Navegante app.
🚖 Táxis e Apps (Uber, Bolt, Free Now)
They are good options, but on party nights there may be longer waiting time and blocked streets. It is worth using for more remote areas or when they are already getting tired.
🚴 Electric bicycles and scooters
Lisbon has several smooth mobility options - such as Gira bicycles or Lime, Bolt, Voi scooters, among others. They can be fun, but be careful on stone sidewalks and descents! Use it carefully, especially at night or in crowded areas.
In short? In June, it's worth betting on the feet and the subway to enjoy everything without stress. Traffic and detours are part of the party - and with patience (and some good shoes), Lisbon becomes even more charming.

Popular saints - especially Saint Anthony, our patron saint - are just the pretext. The party is really about being together, sharing a glass, a bifana, a dance, a smile.
For those who visit Lisbon at this time, it is more than tourism - it is a cultural, emotional, sensory experience. And for us, who live here or who have already fallen in love with this city, it is time to celebrate life with all the intensity it deserves.
So, if you're still wondering if it's worth coming... let us say with all the letters: yes, it's worth it! And a lot. Bring light clothes, comfortable shoes and come with an open heart. Get ready to live unforgettable nights, discover charming corners, eat like never before and feel Lisbon in all its splendour.
And if you see us around in any camp, come and say hello. Because in June, we are all a little bit of Lisbon. 🥰
