Sobre o evento
The International Day of Peace is celebrated annually on September 21.
This global initiative was established by the United Nations in 1981 and was first celebrated in September 1982.
In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the International Day of Peace.
Objectives of the International Day of Peace
The celebration aims to make people aware of the need for peace in the world and to promote acts that result, among others, in the end of conflicts between peoples, the ceasefire and the consecration of world peace.
Every year, a theme is chosen as a reflection for the date. Check out some of them below.
2021: "Recovering better for a fair and sustainable world"
2020: "Molding Peace Together"
2019: "Climate Action for Peace"
2018: "The Right to Peace - Commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights"
2017: "Together for Peace: Respect, Security and Dignity for All"
The end of this day is that the person does something for peace. Among other ideas, you can put a white flag in your house, forgive a friend, make a donation, join the events held around the world, share the official page of this day or a song, such as Imagine by John Lennon, on social networks or sign petitions that circulate on the internet for peace.
Activities and theme
The activities since day range from world peace concerts to art exhibitions, colloquia and walks.
In Portugal, the activities developed are traditionally carried out by the National Council for Peace and Cooperation, in cities such as Porto and Lisbon.
On January 1, World Peace Day is also celebrated, a date created by the Catholic Church.
