Sobre o evento
St. George's Day, known as "holy warrior", is celebrated on April 23.
There is not much historical data about the life of this popular saint of the Church. Although his story is based on legendary and apocryphal documents, the year 275 for his birth and the year 303 for his death (April 23) is pointed out.
Legends describe that this knight from Cappadocia (now Turkey) saved a woman from a dragon, which led to the baptism of thousands of people. Defending his faith until death, he was tortured and beheaded by order of Emperor Diocletian, who had all Christian Roman soldiers arrested and paid tribute to the Roman gods.
Saint George is celebrated especially in places such as the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Georgia, Lithuania, Canada, Catalonia, Genoa, and Rio de Janeiro.
São Jorge is a minor orago in Portugal. D. Nuno Álvares Pereira considered São Jorge responsible for the Portuguese victory in the battle of Aljubarrota, being the Chapel of São Jorge, in Leiria, and the Castle of São Jorge, in Lisbon, in his name. It is believed that it was the English crusaders who would help D. Afonso Henriques to conquer Lisbon, in 1147, who brought the devotion to São Jorge to Portugal.
In addition to the patron saint and patron saint of England, Saint George is the world patron of Scouting, also celebrating World Scouting Day on April 23.
