But it is in summer that this region vibrates with more intensity and invites us to live unique experiences, which mix emotion, tradition and a lot of flavour.
This summer, let's explore what makes Summer in Central Portugal so special?

💦 Nautical stations and river beaches: a summer to really dive
Here at Dicas de Lisboa, we are fans of experiences that make us feel really alive. And when the heat tightens, nothing better than a cool dip in the middle of nature, right? Well, know that the Centre of Portugal is full of perfect places for this with charming river beaches, clear waters and 14 Nautical Stations that are true hidden paradises.
For those who don't know yet, these Nautical Stations are complete destinations where we can combine sport, adventure, relaxation and local culture. All in one place! Let's discover some of our favourites?
Mega Founder: a well-kept secret
Have you ever heard of Mega Fundeira River Beach? It is close to Pedrógão Grande, right at km 306 of the mythical National Road 2. It's one of those beaches that we almost want to keep secret: super clean waters, surrounded by greenery, ideal for canoeing, paddle or even sleeping in a floating house. A true oasis!
Castelo do Bode: adrenaline and incredible views
The Castelo do Bode reservoir is a world apart. There we find beaches like Trízio, Fernandaires and Penedo Furado, each with its beauty. In addition to baths and picnics in the shade, the region is known for being the scene of major wakeboard events and other nautical activities. For those who like adventure, there is an excellent choice.
Valhelhas: pure nature
Right at the foot of Serra da Estrela, Valhelhas River Beach is perfect for those who like breathtaking landscapes. With blue flag, playground, walks and even camping, it is an excellent option for families or for those looking for peace and fresh air.
Palheiros and Zorro: a riverside cinema
Yes, you read it right! The Palheiros and Zorro River Beach, near Coimbra, really has outdoor movie sessions. But that's not all: there are barbeques, canoeing, volleyball courts and plenty of space to enjoy the long summer days with friends or family.
Nautical Stations: far beyond the bath
The most incredible thing about Nautical Stations is that they offer experiences for all tastes. You can paddle quietly on a paddle, accelerate on a jet ski, explore banks on pedestrian paths, participate in activities with local guides... or simply stretch the towel on the grass and watch the time go by.
Many of them are accessible to everyone, with good infrastructure, restaurants nearby and even floating accommodations! Oh, and they still have a strong connection with the culture of the region, there are parties, local products, crafts and a lot of history.

🎉 Festivals, parties and pilgrimages: the summer that is heard, danced and savoured

If there is something we love to share here at Dicas de Lisboa, it's moments that warm the heart and you don't have to look much to find it in the Centre of Portugal. When summer arrives, the region is filled with music, delicious smells, dances, lights and smiles. It's the season of popular festivals, pilgrimages full of tradition, fairs where everything can be found and music festivals that make the ground tremble (of joy!).
Every party has its charm
It's amazing how each location has its own unique way of celebrating. No two parties are the same and that's what makes the summer there so special. Some are big and hectic, others more traditional and familiar. But they all have that authentic and welcoming way that only the Centre knows how to offer.
In the villages, the parties are a return to the roots. We find folk ranches, processions, popular balls, regional snacks and the famous roasted sardine that perfumes the streets. In the cities, the pace accelerates with outdoor stages, DJ sets, national and international artists, lights and sounds until dawn.
And the best? Most of these events are free or have symbolic tickets, which means you can enjoy a lot without spending almost anything.
Festivals that leave memory
Did you know that many of the great summer festivals pass through cities and towns in the Centre? Some names that deserve to be highlighted:
Festival do Vilar de Mouros (Caminha) — Yes, it's already a rock and indie classic.
Bons Sons (Cem Soldos) — A festival made in the village and with the community spirit. It's about Portuguese music, coexistence and sharing.
Portuguese Song Festival in Águeda — Simply unmissable!
Lamprey Festival, Sausage Fair, Holy Queen's Festivals, São Mateus Fair in Viseu... The list is long, delicious and lively.
Summer in the Centre is like this: a constant invitation to dance on the street, toast with friends and discover traditions that pass from generation to generation.
Flavours that accompany the party
You can't talk about parties without talking about food. And the truth is that each pilgrimage or festival has its specialty: be it a steaming stone soup, a conventual sweet, a glass of Bairrada wine or a tavern snack.
And look, it is in these community tables that many friendships are made. We sit, eat, talk to those who are next to us and already feel at home. That's what makes us come back, year after year.
Program yourself and go live all this!
If you are planning your vacation, it is worth following the calendar of parties and festivals in the region. There is always something to happen, from June to September and in places that often surprise for their beauty and hospitality.

☕ Cafés with History: where time slows down and culture flourishes

Do you know those places that make us stop, take a deep breath and feel that we are really living in the moment? The Cafés with History of the Centre of Portugal are exactly like this. More than places to have a coffee, they are true guardians of collective memory. They are spaces full of soul, which tell stories of generations and were (and still are!) Meeting point for artists, thinkers, travellers and lovers of life.
Therefore, today we want to invite you to sit, savour and travel in time with us.
Cafés with charm and a lot of personality
Café Santa Cruz (Coimbra) – Installed in an old church, right next to the Church of Santa Cruz, this is one of those places where even silence has history. With gothic columns and coloured stained glass windows, the environment is magical. Many call it "the most beautiful coffee in Portugal".
Café Nicola (Viseu) – A city classic. With a charming art deco style and lively terrace, it was a meeting point for writers and politicians. It still maintains this bohemian air today, with friendly service and homemade cakes.Pastelaria Briosa (Leiria) – On a corner of the historic centre, it's one of those pastry shops where everything is good - from stories to the smell of fresh coffee with sponge cake. It's a symbol of the city.
Café Avenida (Tomar) – It is located in one of the main squares, overlooking the river and the Convent of Christ in the background. A quiet and charming place.
More than cafes: living spaces of culture
Many of these cafes are stages of exhibitions, recitals, book presentations and even literary gatherings. They are spaces where culture pulsates and where it is easy to lose track of time between a coffee, a conversation and an idea.
The most beautiful? It is to know that decades and decades ago, other people were already there living very similar moments. And it is this connection between past and present that makes Cafés with History so special.
A break with purpose
In a summer full of adventures, walks and discoveries, stopping in a cafe like these is almost a ritual. It is there that energy is recharged, the essence of each city is absorbed and small pearls are discovered, whether in the form of a conventual cake, a conversation with a local or an old photograph on the wall.
